Pitch Idea for a TV Show

Title: Beyond These Walls

Logline/Pitch:
This show is about five Hmong/Hmong-American college students at the University of California (UOC). A complex journey through education seeking for knowledge and opportunities, but most importantly, themselves. It’s about discovering identities, love, sex, relationships, and hope. A time when you explore the endless possibilities and the world around you is infinite. It’s about searching for adventure and excitement...love and companionship...and finding oneself through friendship. It is the best gift, the ultimate blessing, and the greatest challenge.

Lee Lee:
Lee is 18 years old and comes from a metropolitan city. He is the son of a single mother, who works extremely hard to support his education. Lee is soft spoken, humble, and frugal. Growing up in poverty most of his life, Lee aspires to become a social entrepreneur and hopes to someday become the CEO of his own organization. He spends his free time volunteering and sketching landscape art. Lee seeks for the opportunity to one day be able to support and take care of his mother.

Abby Vang:
Abby is 18 years old and comes from an upper-middle class family that lives in the suburbs. She has been showered by wealth most of her life and lives an affluent lifestyle. Abby considers herself American and does not try to identify with being Hmong. Both her parents are successful professionals, her mother a neurosurgeon and her father a lawyer. With tremendous pressure on her to become a doctor, Abby actually aspires to become a photographer instead. She is stuck between a dilemma of separating her dreams from her parents’.

Mai Xiong:
Mai is 18 years old and comes from a small, agricultural town. Mai and her family are recent immigrants to the US and has only been in the country for 5 years. Mai is extremely intelligent and a wizard at math. She graduated as valedictorian of her high school class. Mai aspires to someday become a pediatrician to help disadvantaged kids. She is the definition of an academic scholar, but even with this, she isn’t happy. Mai is queer - bisexual and she can’t seem to build the courage to tell her family of this because it’s culturally unaccepted. 

Nate Vang:
Nate is 19 years old and comes from an urban city. He is a daredevil and chooses to live life by the edge. “You only live once” is a catch phrase you’ll often hear him say. Nate comes from an abusive household, often witnessing and experiencing domestic violence from his alcoholic father. He grew up as a troubled youth with a rap sheet for vandalism to theft. Nate was lucky to have a community pastor who helped him overcome his obstacles. He aspires to become a probation officer to help other individuals change their lives. Nate must overcome his own traumatic past experiences, in order to help others change their lives.

Emma Yang:
Emma is 20 years old and comes from an urban city. She is the mother of a 2 year old child, Zoey. Emma became pregnant with Zoey during her senior year in high school and married her boyfriend at the time, Chad. Due to her pregnancy, she decided to stay closer to home and attended California Community College (CCC) instead of UOC after graduating. With Zoey being 2 years old now, Emma has decided to transfer to UOC to continue her educational pursuit. She aspires to become a computer programmer for a Fortune 500 company. With the lack of support from her husband with her education and moving away 300 miles from home, Emma struggles to be a student, wife, and mother.
